I painted this work in the fall months while in Santa Barbara. It has me dreaming of cozy warm fire-lit living rooms in the bright cold mornings of a snowy wonderland. Not what we were experiencing in SB, but growing up in Wisconsin I spent many a freezing cold snowy morning scraping ice off my windscreen and wishing I was in a warm drawing room watching a fire.

About my process…

I create these paintings using a mixture of oil paint and wax. I utilize other drawing materials throughout the process, melding the drawing, mark-making process with painting.

The finished painting is created through many layers and often take months to finish. The process of layering, scraping and digging back through those layers gives the painting incredible history that is brought up to the surface in part due to the wax mixture itself.

The painting tells a story through the individual movements of my hands, color choices and mood of the finished work. These pieces are a joyful mix of planning and letting go until the final work is brought together in harmony or intended discord.
