Filling the Well in Death Valley

I just got back from a from a week in Death Valley National Park. It was pretty special. We rented an RV and explored as much as we could get to without four wheel drive and heavy duty tires.

This is me at the end of the Mosaic Canyon hike through polished marble narrows and canyon washes. I'm standing in front of a dry waterfall. The colors of the rock must be so rich when they get the rare rainfall.

It was pretty magical. Super peaceful and very dry. 😄The geology of the park is so interesting. Colorful minerals paint colorful pictures along Artist's Drive, a one-way road through gorgeous colored rock. The views hiking Golden Canyon to Zabriskie Point and around Dante's View are extraordinary.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I think one of the most magical moments was late night star gazing out on the salt flats at Badwater Basin. We walked 1.25 miles out to get away from the path and find solitude. I just sat on the salt flats with it's crazy formations and took in the quiet as we rotated through the night sky.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It was our first visit to the park, but we'll definitely be back... for me that'll mean only in winter because the hottest and driest place on earth is not somewhere I want to be when the temps soar! 🥵

Some of my favorite shots from this week in Death Valley National Park.

In order: Sunset view looking south from Dante's View.
The salt flats of Badwater Basin. (The lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level.)
Western view to the Panamint Mountains from Golden Canyon.
Northern view of Death Valley from Dante's View.
Artist's Drive in the distance from the top of Desolation Canyon.
Gorgeous dried washes of Badlands Loop.
Crazy imbedded boulders in the walls of Gower Gulch.

This trip was the perfect start to an online residency I’m taking part in through the Artist Alliance run by gallerist Jen Tough. I am using the residency to create small studies / works on paper as I prepare larger paintings for my spring shows. I’ll share more as the three month residency goes on.
