Fog Wins First - 20" x 20"

Fog Wins First - 20" x 20"

$800.00

Sometimes exploring nature doesn’t always go as planned… my husband and I got up in the wee hours of the morning to watch sunrise from the top of Haleakala. The fog had other ideas. Aside from creating this painting, I have a hilarious photograph of the two of us huddled together with our sweatshirt hoods drawn tight around our faces as we hadn’t dressed for a misty cold and foggy Haleakala sunrise with no sun in sight!

Painted for my show, Visceral Views. This body of work explores the immediate emotional reaction to the wild places and grand vistas of the western United States.

20”h x 20”w, oil & cold wax on cradled wood panels (unframed).

I create these paintings using a mixture of oil paint and wax. I utilize other drawing materials throughout the process, melding the drawing, mark-making process with painting.

The finished painting is created through many layers and often take months to finish. The process of layering, scraping and digging back through those layers gives the painting incredible history that is brought up to the surface in part due to the wax mixture itself.

The painting tells a story through the individual movements of my hands, color choices and mood of the finished work. These pieces are a joyful mix of planning and letting go until the final work is brought together in harmony or intended discord.
