Golden Hour 48" x 48"

Golden Hour 48" x 48"
It was that magic time of day, Golden Hour, the time that photographers and filmmakers covet. The land was lush and fertile and the skies were on fire. You caught the moment. It might never be this magical ever again.
I created this painting for my show, Visceral Views. This body of work explores the immediate emotional reaction to the wild places and grand vistas of the western United States.
48”h x 48”w, oil & cold wax on cradled wood panel (unframed).

I create these paintings using a mixture of oil paint and wax. I utilize other drawing materials throughout the process, melding the drawing, mark-making process with painting.
The finished painting is created through many layers and often take months to finish. The process of layering, scraping and digging back through those layers gives the painting incredible history that is brought up to the surface in part due to the wax mixture itself.
The painting tells a story through the individual movements of my hands, color choices and mood of the finished work. These pieces are a joyful mix of planning and letting go until the final work is brought together in harmony or intended discord.
