Lost In the Gap 24" x 20"
This an abstract rendition on the Gap of Dunlop in County Kerry, Ireland. I began this painting over the summer in a rented back garden studio in the Dublin area. We were there for an extended visit to see family. County Kerry is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been and this painting holds a special place in my heart. It’s part of a series that explores themes of feeling at home in nature, our experience of ‘place’ and transition.
Exact dimensions: 23.5”h x 19.75”w, oil & cold wax on cradled wood panel (unframed).

I create these paintings using a mixture of oil paint and wax. I utilize other drawing materials throughout the process, melding the drawing, mark-making process with painting.
The finished painting is created through many layers and often take months to finish. The process of layering, scraping and digging back through those layers gives the painting incredible history that is brought up to the surface in part due to the wax mixture itself.
The painting tells a story through the individual movements of my hands, color choices and mood of the finished work. These pieces are a joyful mix of planning and letting go until the final work is brought together in harmony or intended discord.
