Stargazing - 30" x 30"

Stargazing - 30" x 30"

$2,000.00

This body of work explores the immediate emotional reaction to the wild places and and grand vistas of the western United States. “Stargazing” is a nod to those treasured nights where you step away from the campfire and see just how far the stars stretch.

We spent a night out on the salt flats at Badwater Basin in Death Valley where the skies opened up, the Milky Way worked it’s magic and the only visible light on the horizon was from Los Angeles in one direction and Las Vegas in the other. It was magic!

30”h x 30”w, oil & cold wax on cradled wood panel (unframed).

I create these paintings using a mixture of oil paint and wax. I utilize other drawing materials throughout the process, melding the drawing, mark-making process with painting.

The finished painting is created through many layers and often take months to finish. The process of layering, scraping and digging back through those layers gives the painting incredible history that is brought up to the surface in part due to the wax mixture itself.

The painting tells a story through the individual movements of my hands, color choices and mood of the finished work. These pieces are a joyful mix of planning and letting go until the final work is brought together in harmony or intended discord.
